EMDR therapy
Looking backward so you can move forward.
EMDR is an evidence-based trauma treatment designed to help difficult experiences become fully integrated memories rather than continuing sources of present-day alarm.
The memory remains. Its authority changes.
When an overwhelming experience is not fully processed, parts of it can remain connected to the original images, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs. A present-day cue may then activate the memory network as though the danger, shame, helplessness, or responsibility still belongs to now.
EMDR uses carefully structured attention and bilateral stimulation to support adaptive processing. The goal is not to erase memory, force disclosure, or persuade you that what happened was acceptable. It is to help the nervous system recognize that the experience is over and reconnect it with present-day information, safety, and choice.
Preparation We establish safety, resources, goals, and a shared understanding of the process.
Targeting We identify the memories, present triggers, beliefs, and physical responses connected to the difficulty.
Processing Bilateral stimulation supports the brain in making new connections without requiring a detailed verbal retelling.
Integration We assess what has changed and strengthen more adaptive beliefs, responses, and future choices.
“EMDR asks us to look backward so we can move forward.”— Chris Walford
